ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Practicing sports during childhood and adolescence provides benefits to cardiac autonomic modulation (CAM) at these stages of life. However, it is not known whether these benefits to CAM persist into adulthood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the association of early sports practice (sports practice in childhood and/or adolescence) with CAM in adult life, regardless of habitual moderate-to-vigorous PA. METHODS: The sample of the present study consisted of 242 adults (141 women and 101 men; age: 41.99 ± 16.24). The assessment of CAM was performed using heart rate variability indices. Sports practice in childhood and adolescence was assessed using a questionnaire. The intensity of physical activity was assessed using accelerometry. To analyze the association between previous sports practice (childhood and/or adolescence) and CAM, the Generalized Linear Model was adopted, considering CAM indices as continuous variables and early sports practice as a 3-fold factor (no sports practice; sports practice in childhood or adolescence; and sports practice in both childhood and adolescence) adjusted by sex, age, socioeconomic condition, and moderate to vigorous PA. RESULTS: Sports practice in childhood was associated with the average standard deviation of all normal RR intervals expressed in milliseconds (SDNN): ß = 5.89; 95%CI: 0.25;11.52, and the standard deviation of the long-term intervals between consecutive heartbeats (SD2): ß = 7.63; 95%CI:1.04; 14.23 indices. Sports practice in adolescence was associated in adulthood with the SD2 index: ß = 7.37; 95%CI: 0.71;14.04. Sports practice in at least one of the periods (childhood or adolescence) was significantly associated with the square root of the mean square of the differences between adjacent normal RR intervals for a period of time expressed in milliseconds (RMSSD) (ß = 8.86; 95%CI = 0.71;17.01), and the standard deviation of the instantaneous beat to beat variability (SD1) (ß = 6.21; 95%CI = 0.45;11.97). Sports practice at both stages of life was significantly associated with better SDNN (ß = 7.70; 95%CI = 1.16;14.23) and SD2 (ß = 10.18; 95%CI = 2.51;17.85). CONCLUSION: Early sports practice was associated with better CAM in adulthood, independently of the current physical activity level. Based on these findings, sports practice is encouraged from childhood and adolescence, for benefits to CAM in adult life.

ABSTRACT

The present study describes the seasonal and circadian variations of the major compounds from Lippia alba leaves. SPSS was used to identify, quantify, and associate the variations in the secondary metabolites of this species through HPLC/DAD analysis of the leaves hydroethanolic extracts of six selected L. alba specimens. For the circadian study, the samples were collected at four different daily hours in each year's season. For the seasonal study, the samples were collected monthly from the same individuals for two consecutive years (2018 and 2019). These samples were analyzed and quantified using a validated HPLC method for flavonoids, iridoids, and phenyl ethanoid glycoside. Mussaenoside, acteoside, and tricin-7-O-diglucuronide showed a moderate positive correlation between their biosynthesis and the precipitation index, while epi-loganin had a moderate negative correlation. Acteoside showed a moderate positive correlation between the minimum registered temperature and its production. Compared with previous studies, a drastic reduction (about 95%) in the production of tricin-7-O-diglucuronide compared with previous study and this difference could be attributed to the plant's aging. Thus, the data demonstrated that lower temperatures and high rainfall could favor the production of the major L. alba active compounds (acteoside and tricin-7-O-diglucuronide) and that older plants harm their production.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of four different Electronic Foraminal Locators (EFLs): Root ZX II (J. Morita, Tokyo, Japan), RomiApex A15 (Romidan, Kiryat-Ono, Israel), FinePex (Schuster, Porto Alegre, Brazil) and VDW Gold (VDW, Munich, Germany), in determining root length during endodontic retreatment steps. Twenty-seven human unirooted teeth had their crowns sectioned to standardize the teeth to 17 mm. The actual tooth length was visualized with an operating microscope and a #15 file juxtaposed to the apical foramen. Teeth were instrumented with files R25 and R40, and at the end of each instrumentation, measurements of root canal lengths were made with files #25 and #40. Then, the teeth had their root canals filled with standardized Gutta-Percha R40 cones and Endofill cement, and after seven days, they were uncovered with R25 and R40 files, respectively. New measurements were made with #25 and #40 files between the uncovering with each file. The data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Chi-square tests, considered significant when P<0.05. All devices tended to under-measurement when the obturating material was partially removed with the R25 file. When the canals were uncovered with the R40 instrument, the effectiveness of the appliances increased significantly (P<0.05). At 0.40 mm diameter, the mean accuracy of the Romiapex A15 appliance was statistically lower than the other EFLs (P<0.001), showing a tendency to over-measurement. In conclusion, all the tested appliances showed similar efficacy when acceptable limits were observed. The permanence of the remaining filling material in the apical third influenced the accuracy and efficacy of EFLs in endodontic retreatment cases. Key words:Endodontics, odontometry, apical foramen.

In Latin America, rabies virus has persisted in a cycle between Desmodus rotundus vampire bats and cattle, potentially enhanced by deforestation. We modeled bovine rabies virus outbreaks in Costa Rica relative to land-use indicators and found spatial-temporal relationships among rabies virus outbreaks with deforestation as a predictor.

ABSTRACT

We describe a feline sporotrichosis cluster and zoonotic transmission between one of the affected cats and a technician at a veterinary clinic in Kansas, USA. Increased awareness of sporotrichosis and the potential for zoonotic transmission could help veterinary professionals manage feline cases and take precautions to prevent human acquisition.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of sleep deprivation has increased in pediatric populations, however, the relationship with physical activity (PA) remains uncertain and lacks evidence. Although some studies have shown that parents' lifestyle habits can influence this process, one point that requires further clarification in the literature is whether parents' sleep quality is linked to that of their children and whether parents' physical activity could play an important role in these possible relationships. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship of sleep quality between parents and children and verify the role of physical activity in this association. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. Sleep quality was assessed using the Mini Sleep Questionnaire. The amount of sleep was estimated by the number of hours slept. PA domains (occupational activities, leisure, and active commuting) were assessed using the Baecke questionnaire, while moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) was assessed with an accelerometer. Socioeconomic status was obtained through a questionnaire. The relationship of sleep quality between parents and children was carried out using hierarchical models with Binary Logistic Regression, where the factors were inserted one by one (1. unadjusted model; 2. sociodemographic variables; 3. children's PA; 4. parents' PA). RESULTS: The study sample consisted of 102 children and adolescents (6-17 years), 92 mothers, and 69 fathers. Poor sleep quality of mothers was associated with their children's sleep quality (OR = 3.95; 95%CI = 1.33-11.38; P = 0.013). After inserting mothers' PA intensity into the final model, the associations remained significant (OR = 8.05; 1.33-48.59; P = 0.023). No relationship was observed between poor sleep quality of fathers and their children's sleep quality. CONCLUSION: The relationship between poor sleep quality of mothers and that of their children remained significant, regardless of confounding variables.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic sporotrichosis is a neglected fungal disease, whereby outbreaks are primarily driven by Sporothrix brasiliensis and linked to cat-to-human transmission. To understand the emergence and spread of sporotrichosis in Brazil, the epicentre of the current epidemic in South America, we aimed to conduct whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to describe the genomic epidemiology. METHODS: In this genomic epidemiology study, we included Sporothrix spp isolates from sporotrichosis cases from Brazil, Colombia, and the USA. We conducted WGS using Illumina NovaSeq on isolates collected by three laboratories in Brazil from humans and cats with sporotrichosis between 2013 and 2022. All isolates that were confirmed to be Sporothrix genus by internal transcribed spacer or beta-tubulin PCR sequencing were included in this study. We downloaded eight Sporothrix genome sequences from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (six from Brazil, two from Colombia). Three Sporothrix spp genome sequences from the USA were generated by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as part of this study. We did phylogenetic analyses and correlated geographical and temporal case distribution with genotypic features of Sporothrix spp isolates. FINDINGS: 72 Sporothrix spp isolates from 55 human and 17 animal sporotrichosis cases were included: 67 (93%) were from Brazil, two (3%) from Colombia, and three (4%) from the USA. Cases spanned from 1999 to 2022. Most (61 [85%]) isolates were S brasiliensis, and all were reported from Brazil. Ten (14%) were Sporothrix schenckii and were reported from Brazil, USA, and Colombia. For S schenckii isolates, two distinct clades were observed wherein isolates clustered by geography. For S brasiliensis isolates, five clades separated by more than 100 000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms were observed. Among the five S brasiliensis clades, clades A and C contained isolates from both human and cat cases, and clade A contained isolates from six different states in Brazil. Compared with S brasiliensis isolates, larger genetic diversity was observed among S schenckii isolates from animal and human cases within a clade. INTERPRETATION: Our results suggest that the ongoing epidemic driven by S brasiliensis in Brazil represents several, independent emergence events followed by animal-to-animal and animal-to human transmission within and between Brazilian states. These results describe how S brasiliensis can emerge and spread within a country. ABSTRACT

Introduction: Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) is characterised by a plethora of symptoms, with fatigue appearing as the most frequently reported. The alterations that drive both the persistent and post-acute disease newly acquired symptoms are not yet fully described. Given the lack of robust knowledge regarding the mechanisms of PCC we have examined the impact of inflammation in PCC, by evaluating serum cytokine profile and its potential involvement in inducing the different symptoms reported. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 227 participants who were hospitalised with acute COVID-19 in 2020 and came back for a follow-up assessment 6-12 months after hospital discharge. The participants were enrolled in two symptomatic groups: Self-Reported Symptoms group (SR, n = 96), who did not present major organ lesions, yet reported several debilitating symptoms such as fatigue, muscle weakness, and persistent loss of sense of smell and taste; and the Self-Reported Symptoms and decreased Pulmonary Function group (SRPF, n = 54), composed by individuals with the same symptoms described by SR, plus diagnosed pulmonary lesions. A Control group (n = 77), with participants with minor complaints following acute COVID-19, was also included in the study. Serum cytokine levels, symptom questionnaires, physical performance tests and general clinical data were obtained in the follow-up assessment. Results: SRPF presented lower IL-4 concentration compared with Control (q = 0.0018) and with SR (q = 0.030), and lower IFN-α2 serum content compared with Control (q = 0.007). In addition, SRPF presented higher MIP-1ß serum concentration compared with SR (q = 0.029). SR presented lower CCL11 (q = 0.012 and q = 0.001, respectively) and MCP-1 levels (q = 0.052 for both) compared with Control and SRPF. SRPF presented lower G-CSF compared to Control (q = 0.014). Female participants in SR showed lower handgrip strength in relation to SRPF (q = 0.0082). Male participants in SR and SRPF needed more time to complete the timed up-and-go test, as compared with men in the Control group (q = 0.0302 and q = 0.0078, respectively). Our results indicate that different PCC symptom profiles are accompanied by distinct inflammatory markers in the circulation. Of particular concern are the lower muscle function findings, with likely long-lasting consequences for health and quality of life, found for both PCC phenotypes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss the recent discoveries and limitations of the available literature on emerging circulating biomarkers of cancer cachexia. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies on circulating factors in cancer cachexia show promising alternatives for diagnosing the syndrome in a minimally invasive manner in the clinic setting, as well as potential targets for cancer cachexia treatment. Factors secreted by the tumor and the adipose tissue, such as extracellular vesicles and soluble proteins, respectively, have been shown to either directly induce wasting in vitro and in vivo or to be altered in the cachectic phenotype. The detection and characterization of circulating cells allows detection of the precachectic stage and the levels of the soluble immune checkpoint protein programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) are correlated with the presence of the hallmarks of cancer cachexia. SUMMARY: Structural, molecular, and metabolic alterations have been observed in various tissues, revealing the occurrence of sustained inter-compartment crosstalk in cachectic patients. Early diagnosis of cancer cachexia becomes crucial to avoid the establishment of refractory cachexia through the implementation of interventions that may attenuate systemic inflammation and muscle loss. More studies on human cancer cachexia are required in order to address the recently discovered cachexia-associated circulating factors' value as biomarkers of the syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Over the past two decades, research on bat-associated microbes such as viruses, bacteria and fungi has dramatically increased. Here, we synthesize themes from a conference symposium focused on advances in the research of bats and their microbes, including physiological, immunological, ecological and epidemiological research that has improved our understanding of bat infection dynamics at multiple biological scales. We first present metrics for measuring individual bat responses to infection and challenges associated with using these metrics. We next discuss infection dynamics within bat populations of the same species, before introducing complexities that arise in multi-species communities of bats, humans and/or livestock. Finally, we outline critical gaps and opportunities for future interdisciplinary work on topics involving bats and their microbes.

ABSTRACT

Abdominal pain is one of the most common presenting chief complaints in the emergency department (ED). Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) is an ultrasound-guided nerve block with proven effectiveness in treating visceral and somatic abdominal pain. Despite the increasing popularity of ESPB, its role in the management of non-surgical abdominal pain has not yet been characterized. Our scoping review aims to review the current literature on the safety and efficacy of ESPB in the management of patients experiencing intractable, non-surgical abdominal pain. We searched PubMed and Scopus to evaluate the existing literature on ESPB for non-surgical abdominal pain. Reviewers screened 30 titles and abstracts that met the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Following initial screening, 24 articles underwent full-text review. Two reviewers also screened references included in each study. A total of 14 journal articles were reviewed, including 12 case-based studies, one systematic review, and one narrative review of ESPB in the treatment of non-surgical abdominal pain. All cases described the successful use of ESPB in treating abdominal pain refractory to oral or intravenous analgesic medications, and each case reported no complications. This scoping review provides support for ESPB in the management of intractable, non-surgical abdominal pain. ESPB demonstrates efficacy in alleviating various conditions such as functional abdominal pain, renal colic, pancreatitis, herpetic pain, and cancer-related pain. Theoretical risks such as pneumothorax, bleeding, and infection are possible, although the studies reviewed did not report such complications.

Sporothrix brasiliensis is an emerging zoonotic fungal pathogen that can be difficult to treat. Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed on the mold phase of a convenience sample of 61 Sporothrix spp. isolates from human and cat sporotrichosis cases in Brazil using the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute standard M38. A bimodal distribution of azole susceptibility was observed with 50% (28/56) of S. brasiliensis isolates showing elevated itraconazole minimum inhibitory concentrations ≥16 µg/mL. Phylogenetic analysis found the in vitro resistant isolates were not clonal and were distributed across three different S. brasiliensis clades. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis was performed to identify potential mechanisms of in vitro resistance. Two of the 28 resistant isolates (MIC ≥16 mg/L) had a polymorphism in the cytochrome P450 gene, cyp51, corresponding to the well-known G448S substitution inducing azole resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus. SNPs corresponding to other known mechanisms of azole resistance were not identified in the remaining 26 in vitro resistant isolates.

Material and Methods: Twenty-seven human single-rooted teeth had their crowns sectioned at the cementoenamel junction, and the actual length of the tooth was obtained by visualizing with an operative microscope a #15 file placed adjacent to the apical foramen. The teeth were instrumented with R25 and R40 files, and at the end of each instrumentation, measurements of the lengths of the root canals were made with #25 and #40 files. The data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and chi-square tests and were considered significant when P<0.05. All devices showed a tendency to underestimate measurements by 0.25 mm diameter. Results: The mean accuracy of the Root ZX II appliance was statistically lower than the other EFLs (P<0.001). For the 0.40 mm diameter, the mean accuracy of the Romiapex A15 appliance was statistically higher than the other LEFs (P<0.001). However, when the diameter was 0.40 mm, only the Romiapex A15 device tended to overmeasure. Regarding the acceptable limits of variation, it was observed that the devices showed similar efficiency in determining odontometry (P>0.05), both with diameters of 0.25 mm and 0.40 mm. Conclusions: It was concluded that the devices presented similar and adequate efficacy when observing the limits of acceptable measurements. It was observed that increasing the apical diameter did not influence the accuracy of EFLs in determining root canal lengths. CONTEXT: Faculty productivity is of interest for hospital and university administrators as pressure is placed on them by government and private payors. Further, the effect of trainees on clinical productivity is of personal interest to physicians because their performance evaluations and earning potential are often tied to their productivity. Several groups have utilized creative methodology to study the effect of learners on emergency department (ED) productivity, but they were faced with multiple confounding variables for which it was difficult to adjust. In this study, we utilize relative value unit (RVU)/h to study the effect of resident physicians and medical students on the productivity of academic emergency physicians (EPs) during the implementation of a new residency program. Each physician's productivity on shifts with distinct types of learners present is compared to their shifts worked without any learners during the same time frame. Each attending physician serves as their own control while the confounding variables introduced by comparing over multiple years are minimized. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to measure the influence of emergency medicine (EM) residents on the clinical productivity of attending EPs. METHODS: We conducted an observational study of a single ED during implementation of a new residency program. The productivity of each EP was measured by RVU/h billed. Trainees' schedules and end-of-shift evaluations were utilized to determine what learners (if any) were working with the EP on each shift. RVU/h calculations were performed for each EP (overall, when working without learners, and when working with each of the four learner categories). The primary outcome (determined a priori) was the difference in RVU/h for the attending EPs when they worked without learners compared to when they worked a majority of their shift with at least one learner. The secondary outcome (also determined a priori) was determining the influence of the learners of each type on EP RVU/h for the subgrouped shifts in which a learner was present for the majority of the shift. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in mean EP RVU/h when attendings worked with a medical student or non-EM R1 in comparison to working without learners in the 1761 ED encounters analyzed (12.95 RVU/h vs. 12.52 RVU/h; p=0.125). Although there was variability among individual physicians, EP RVU/h increased significantly for the overall group when one or more EM R1s were present (15.19 RVU/h with one EM R1 present, 15.25 RVU/h with two, 24.75 RVU/h with three; p<0.001). Similarly, mean EP productivity increased significantly with the addition of an EM R2 (17.96 RVU/h vs. 16.84 RVU/h; p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of EM residents was positively associated with the clinical productivity of EM faculty as measured by RVU/h. There was also a positive association between productivity and the number of EM residents present as well as their training level. Non-EM residents and medical students had no effect on EP productivity.

ABSTRACT

Candida auris is an emerging human fungal pathogen, first described in Japan in 2009, and first detected in the United States in 2016. Here, we report the first-ever description of C. auris colonizing a human pet, the first identification of C. auris in a non-human mammal in the United States and the first C. auris isolate from the state of Kansas. While analyzing the oral mycobiome of dogs from a shelter in Kansas, the oral swab from one dog was found to contain C. auris as well as three other fungal species. The presence of C. auris in a dog suggests the possibility of zoonotic transmission to humans. The isolate is a member of Clade IV, which has been found in patients in Chicago and Florida, while Clades I and III are the most prevalent in the United States. The isolate is resistant to fluconazole, terbinafine, and amphotericin B but susceptible to caspofungin, consistent with the drug-resistant characteristics of many human C. auris isolates. The source of C. auris transient colonization in this dog is unknown, and there is no evidence that it was further transmitted to humans, other dogs in the shelter, or pets in its adopted household. Isolation of C. auris from a dog in Kansas has public health implications as a potential emerging source for the zoonotic spread of this pathogenic fungus, and for the development of antifungal resistance.IMPORTANCECandida auris is an emerging fungal infection of humans and is particularly problematic because it is multi-drug resistant and difficult to treat. It is also known to be spread from person to person by contact and can remain on surfaces for long periods of time. In this report, a dog in a shelter in Kansas is found to be colonized with Candida auris. This is the first study to document the presence of Candida auris on a pet, the first to document C. auris presence on a non-human mammal in the United States, and the first to report an isolate of C. auris within the state of Kansas. The presence of C. auris in a pet dog raises the possibility of zoonotic transmission from pets to human or vice versa.

ABSTRACT

Background: Time spent on screen devices affects sleep quality and duration leading to several health impairments in youth. Although physical activity (PA) benefits sleep patterns and decreases screen time in adolescents, it is unclear whether the relationship between sleep quality/duration and screen time could be influenced by PA levels. Objective: To analyze the association between sleep quality and duration with screen time in Brazilian adolescents according PA levels. Methods: The sample included 1010 adolescents aged 13.2 ± 2.4 years (n = 556 females - 55 % of the sample). Sleep quality and sleep duration, and PA were assessed by Mini Sleep and Baecke questionnaires, respectively. Participants in the highest quartile were classified as physically active. Screen time was analyzed by the self-reported number of hours spent on different screen devices (i.e., television, computer, videogame, and cellphone/tablet). Participants in the highest tertile were classified as having high screen time. Sex, age, and body mass index were considered covariates in binary logistic regression models. Results: Poor sleep quality was observed in 52.3 % of the sample, whereas 46.6 % reported sleeping less than eight hours/day. High screen time was associated with poor sleep quality (OR = 1.45; 95 %CI = 1.01-2.12) and insufficient sleep duration (OR = 1.52; 95 %CI = 1.01-2.03) in adolescents insufficiently active. There were no associations between screen time and sleep parameters in active adolescents. Conclusion: High screen time was associated with poor sleep quality and insufficient sleep duration only in insufficiently active adolescents. These results suggest that high PA levels may contribute to improving sleep patterns in pediatric population.

Chronic high stress levels related to work impact the quality of life (QoL). Although physical activity improves QoL, it is not clear whether this life study habit could attenuate possible relationships between QoL and stress in public school teachers. The sample for this study was made up of 231 teachers from public schools. QoL was assessed using the Short-Form Health Survey and physical activity via Baecke's questionnaire. A Likert scale assessed stress level perception. Poisson Regression analyzed the association between stress level and QoL domains adjusted for sex, age, and socioeconomic conditions (model 1). In model 2, physical activity level was inserted in addition to model 1. Seven out of eight domains of QoL, except the domain of pain, were associated with high levels of stress (all p < 0.05-model 1). However, in model 2, the associations of the high levels of stress with general health status (p = 0.052) and functional capacity (p = 0.081) domains of QoL were mitigated. Our results indicated that physical activity mitigated the relationship between higher levels of stress and lower perception of general health status and functional capacity domains in secondary public school teachers.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of fasting easing on laboratory measurements of the lipid profile, in order to contribute to the fidelity of interpretation of laboratory results. Starting in October 2022, a Systematic Literature Review (SRL) was carried out, using articles indexed in the electronic databases PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, LILACS and Cochrane Library, following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes Group (PRISMA). This RSL was registered with PROSPERO, under registration number CRD42022370007. For inclusion, articles had to be original and developed in humans. After evaluating the methodological quality and analyzing the risk of bias, we obtained 16 articles published between 1994 and 2021, providing data on a total of 398,709 individuals, aged between 3 and 93 years. According to the selected studies, lipid profile measurements performed with flexible fasting, in addition to bringing benefits to patients and the pre-analytical system of the clinical laboratory, are more suitable for determining cardiovascular risk, mainly through the assessment of values obtained in the determination of triglycerides. It is therefore concluded that the optional use of fasting must be established through medical advice. In addition, laboratory methods and readings must be readjusted to this reality, informing through the report the parameters related to the lipid profile with and without the use of a 12-hour fast.

ABSTRACT

Africa experiences frequent emerging disease outbreaks among humans, with bats often proposed as zoonotic pathogen hosts. We comprehensively reviewed virus-bat findings from papers published between 1978 and 2020 to evaluate the evidence that African bats are reservoir and/or bridging hosts for viruses that cause human disease. We present data from 162 papers (of 1322) with original findings on (1) numbers and species of bats sampled across bat families and the continent, (2) how bats were selected for study inclusion, (3) if bats were terminally sampled, (4) what types of ecological data, if any, were recorded and (5) which viruses were detected and with what methodology. We propose a scheme for evaluating presumed virus-host relationships by evidence type and quality, using the contrasting available evidence for Orthoebolavirus versus Orthomarburgvirus as an example. We review the wording in abstracts and discussions of all 162 papers, identifying key framing terms, how these refer to findings, and how they might contribute to people's beliefs about bats. We discuss the impact of scientific research communication on public perception and emphasize the need for strategies that minimize human-bat conflict and support bat conservation. Finally, we make recommendations for best practices that will improve virological study metadata.
